A couple of weeks ago, I learned how to make bagels . . . it’s great to add something else to my list that I don’t buy anymore. These are super easy, and it goes something like this:
Simple Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups water, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 pkg. dry yeast, 4 - 4 1/2 cups flour, and baking soda
Combine water, brown sugar, and yeast and let it sit for 5 min. It will look like this:
Add flour and beat with dough hook or knead on floured surface 6-7 minutes or until smooth.
Let the dough rest for 10 minutes.
Fill a saucepan 3/4 full with water. For every cup of water, add 2 tsp baking soda to the pan. Bring to a boil.
Divide dough into 12 equal balls that look something like this:
Shape each dough into a flattened round disk. Press thumbs into center and pull dough outward to make a center hole. Drop each bagel into the boiling soda water for about 10 seconds.
Remove with a slotted spoon and place on greased baking sheet and bake at 450 degrees for 8-9 minutes until golden brown.
Voila!
Don’t you want one? Try it – you will be amazed at how easy it is. . . .
If you get really adventurous, you can knead nuts, or fruits, or seeds into the dough when you add the flour in the 3rd step above. Who knows? Maybe you’ll want to open a bagel shop.
Wow, I had doubts at the beginning of the post. But those actually look like bagels!!! Hmm...maybe I'll try it :)

I can't wait to smoosh some seeds on there and make them all gourmet! Have you tried to make them whole wheat? If so, what was your mix? Flour vs. whole wheat flour?
